Cedar Shingle Siding
Reading, MA
About this project
A gambrel-roofed addition in Reading, clad in western red cedar shingles. Cedar is laid by hand, one course at a time, and every course has to stay level and land correctly at the corner boards and around each window — there is nowhere to hide a drifting line.
The shingles went on over ZIP System sheathing, so the wall was already air- and water-sealed before the first course. New white trim, corner boards and a shingled entry portico finish it.
The cedar is left to weather naturally. It will move from this honey tone toward silver-grey over the next few seasons.
